Type, press Ctrl/⌘+Enter, done. * **Dashboard widget** — quick-add plus your ten most recent notes, pinned ones first, each showing the page it was added on. * **Post editor sidebar** — notes attached to the post or page you are editing, right next to the content. * **Full editor** — every note is a regular block-editor document with autosave and revisions. * **Export** — download any list view as CSV or JSON. Only the notes you can see are ever exported; the core Tools Export screen deliberately leaves notes out. **Attach notes to pages** Open the toolbar popover while viewing or editing a post or page and the note is attached to it. Those notes show up in that post’s editor sidebar and are listed first in the popover whenever you come back to that page. **Share exactly as much as you want** Each note has one of four visibilities: * **Only me** — the default. Nobody else can see it. * **Specific users** — pick people by name. * **Specific roles** — for example every Editor. * **Everyone on this site** — any logged-in user. Sharing is read-only unless you switch on _Allow editing_. Only the author can delete a note or change who it is shared with. **A private note is private** Administrators are **not** granted access to other users’ private notes. Access is enforced server-side in every path: the notes list, the REST API, the dashboard widget, revisions and the read-only viewer. What you see is exactly what you are allowed to see, and the counts in the list views match. **Lean by design** * Notes are a custom post type, so the block editor, autosave, revisions, REST and the list table come from WordPress core. * No Composer dependencies, no CSS framework, no jQuery UI, no build step. Three small plain-JavaScript files. * Nothing is ever output on the public site. Upload the `jotwing` folder to `/wp-content/plugins/`, or install it from the Plugins screen. 2. Activate it. 3. You will find **Notes** in the admin menu, a **New note** item in the toolbar and a **Notes** widget on the dashboard. ## FAQ ### Who can create notes? Every role that can edit posts: Administrator, Editor, Author and Contributor on a standard install. Subscribers can read notes shared with them (for example site- wide notes) but cannot create any. Developers can change the list with the `quicknotes_capability_roles` filter. ### Can an administrator read my private notes? No. A note set to _Only me_ is visible to its author alone. Administrators receive no special access, and the plugin’s automated tests check this rule specifically. ### Can someone I share a note with delete it or share it further? No. Recipients can read the note, and edit it if you switched on _Allow editing_. Deleting a note and changing its sharing settings are always reserved for the author. ### Where are notes stored? In your own database as a private post type (`qn_note`). Nothing leaves your site. ### Do notes appear on the public website? Never. The post type is not public, has no URL, is excluded from search, feeds, sitemaps and the REST search endpoint. ### How do I attach a note to a page? Open the page (on the front end or in the editor) and click **New note** in the toolbar. The popover shows that page’s notes and attaches the new one to it unless you untick _Attach the new note to this page_. You can also add notes from the ** Notes** sidebar inside the post editor. ### Can I export my notes? Yes. On the Notes screen, pick a view (All, Mine, Shared with me, Site-wide) and click **Export CSV** or **Export JSON**. The file contains exactly the notes in that view. Notes are excluded from the WordPress Tools Export screen on purpose, because that exporter would ignore per-note privacy. ### What happens when I uninstall? Deleting the plugin from the Plugins screen removes every note, all note meta and revisions, and the capabilities it added to roles.
