Add From Server

The heart of a CMS is the ability to upload and insert content, WordPress does a fantastic job at this, unfortunately, some web hosts have limited servers, or users simply do not have the ability to upload large files through their web browser.
Add From Server is designed to help ease this pain, You can upload a bunch of files via FTP (Or your favourite transmission method) and simply import those files from the webserver directly into WordPress.

  • The import manager, This allows you to select which files to import. Note that files which cannot be imported are Red.
  • The Options panel, This allows you to specify what users can access Add From Server, and which folders users can import files from.

What placeholders can I use in the Root path option?

You can use %role% and %username% only.
In the case of %role%, the first role which the user has is used, this can mean that in complex installs where a user has many roles that using %role% could be unreliable.

Why does the file I want to import have a red background?

WordPress only allows the importing/uploading of certain file types to improve your security.
If you wish to add extra file types, you can use a plugin such as: You can also enable “Unfiltered uploads” globally for WordPress if you’d like to override this security function. Please see the WordPress support forum for details.

Where are the files saved?

If you import a file which is outside your standard upload directory (usually wp-content/uploads/) then it will be copied to your current upload directory setting as normal.
If you however import a file which is already within the uploads directory (for example, wp-content/uploads/2011/02/ then the file will not be copied, and will be used as-is.

I have a a bug report

Terrible Support

The entire point of this plug-in is to make images and media on the server available to use within WordPress but I can’t do any of that.

Followed the proper procedure and instructions from the plug-in and it doesn’t work

Started a support topic and it’s been 3 days with not a single response or solution

Fantastic !!!!!

Let me start by saying THANK YOU !!!!
Spent 2 days trying to upload 5 pdf files none exceeding 40 Mb per pdf file and the WordPress media shows 64 Mb maximum.
Every time I would upload I got an HTTP Error.
Contacted Hostgator for help ans even created a php.ini file with new code and that didn’t work either.
I than found a link <a href=” which led me to Adrian Segar comments at the bottom of the page.

If you are tired of trying all the “solutions” suggested around the internet to this infuriating problem, here is a foolproof method to get your images, videos, or other accepted file types into the WordPress Media Library:

Add From Server

So Thank you to Adrian Segar and to the developer of Add From Server.
Once I uploaded to the proper directory via file manager or FTP that’s when ADD FROM SERVER worked like magic.
Thanks again

Unlimited Access to file system

I noticed that this plugin could just see all the files I have and even cross over to other addon domains on a server. To me, using this in such a situation is very risky

Could do with some features

A promising plugin and the only one I could find on multiple blogs to solve this problem but I have 6000 images to import and the plugin bombs out when ticking all the images you want to import.

Would be nice if there was a pagination option to be able to do batches of 100/200/300/400/500 etc

Doesn’t work

Select all checkbox crashes the tab if you have more than 100 images.
After selecting a few and hitting Import to test, they didn’t actually show up in the media library.
